Plenty of protests, but where's today's Dylan?

“The times they are a–changin',” sang Bob Dylan. But when times did change, protest songs such as that one went out of fashion quickly. Dylan distanced himself from what he called his “finger-pointing songs” and so long as the economy and mood of the country seemed relatively fine, there didn’t seem to be much need for protest music.

Why Nirvana's 'Nevermind' spoke to a generation

It was one of the most influential rock albums of all time and arguably the last rock album to drastically change the course of popular music. And come Sept. 24, the album in question, Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” will mark its 20th anniversary with as much fanfare as you’d expect from such a significant piece of pop culture history.

From videos to 'Shore'

Turning 30 usually signifies that a person has hit a certain maturity level and has reached full adulthood. But that doesn’t really apply to MTV, which celebrates its 30th birthday on Aug. 1. The first-ever 24-hour music channel has made it a point not to grow up and to instead align itself with the kids of each succeeding generation.

Things have changed, but Dylan still vital

Bob Dylan can agitate people — much like the way he used to when he was in his 20s and being branded as “Judas” for daring to play loud rock music to folk-loving audiences.

Why Taylor Swift’s good girl image sells

The success of Taylor Swift flies in the face of seemingly every element it takes to be a female mega-star in today’s pop world. The singer-songwriter doesn’t have a sexualized image, she doesn’t make transparent bids for media attention, and her songs are introspective and confessional, not gimmicky and exhibitionist.

Gaga’s political foray is admirable but flawed

Viral video makes VMAs relevant again

The first Arianah Brown ever heard of Justin Bieber was when the 12-year-old daughter of one of her friends posted a link of the teen singer performing an acoustic song on Facebook. It didn’t surprise Brown when she learned a few years later that Bieber had become a pop sensation, since he’d already become an online one.

Sex! Nudity! Why Katy Perry is hot

A nude image of Katy Perry graces the cover of her latest album, “Teenage Dream,” which was released on Aug. 24. What’s shocking is that this is not so shocking. In the era of Lady Gaga’s nearly nude crowd surfing at Lollapalooza and Miley Cyrus’ underage stripper-pole dancing, Perry’s CD cover seems just another in a long line of attention-grabbing tactics by a mainstream pop artist.

Death brought out Jackson’s human side

When Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris, paid tribute to her late father at his memorial service, we glimpsed a side of the pop icon we’d rarely seen: the father. As Paris Jackson choked back tears and said, “Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine,” the star’s weirdness and personal troubles became a lot less relevant than the fact that his kids were now without a dad.

In reality, some stage parents are very scary

Remembering concert documentaries that rock

I never cared much for Pink Floyd until a friend persuaded me to go with him to a late-night screening of “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” when we were sophomores in high school. Actually, let me put that another way: I hated Pink Floyd. They were a ’70s band known for drawn-out songs and elaborate concept albums, and I was an ’80s kid who liked loud, fast punk rock.
